Is Self Storage The Right Choice For Your Household Belongings?

You might need storage for your household belongings if your new residence isn’t ready for you at the time of your move, or maybe you need to declutter your home before putting it on the market.

Find out what you need to know to make an informed decision between self-storage and warehouse storage.

Self Storage

To help you make an informed decision regarding a storage facility, following are four questions to ask before choosing a self-storage unit:

    1. What are the add-on or hidden fees?

Ask in advance what fees you will be required to pay that are above and beyond the advertised price.

    1. What are the start-up fees?

Self-storage units often charge fees simply to start your service. You shouldn’t need to pay more than $30 in start-up fees.

    1. How many items do you need to store?

Before storage companies can give you an estimate, you’ll need to tell them how many items you are looking to put into storage. The storage facility will then be able to tell you how big of a unit you will need, and the monthly cost.

    1. What are the security features?

Make sure that access is limited, and that there are plenty of security cameras and locks.

Once you narrow down your selection to a few self-storage companies, be sure to inspect the unit. Look for water damage, oil stains, and pests.

Warehouse Storage

Your moving and storage company can usually provide you with warehouse or vault storage that protects your items from the elements.

If you have items to store, and will be moving them to a new residence in the future, there may be fewer costs if your moving company already has your items in their storage warehouse facility.

Pro tips

Be aware of what you can and can not store in a storage facility.

Do not store anything that is perishable or hazardous such as food, plants, or gasoline.

OK to store non-perishables and furniture such as computers, mattresses, clothes, home decorations etc.
