Where did the summer go? Last time we looked around, it was the 4thof July and it seemed like the new school year was still a long way off. Time has a way of sneaking up on all of us and unbelievably, it is time to move back to school and start a new year. Without proper planning, moving back can be a stressful experience. The good news is that it does not have to be. Here are some great tips on how to have a fantastic moving experience back to school.
1. Get A Plan Together With Your Roommate – Before You Move in
Be sure that you are on the same page with your roommate regarding how the living quarters are going to be set up. It is a lot easier to move things once, than have to reshuffle beds and furniture multiple times. Also, do not assume that your roomie has the same decorative tastes as you do. Talk about everything beforehand – it will avoid problems and even some hurt feelings.
2. Let Your Parents Be Sappy
Your being in college means a lot to your parents for after all, they played a major role in getting you there. Let them have their moment and take pictures of things, even if it does not make sense to you. Parents are very sentimental about their kids growing up and want to capture special events along the way. Who knows – you might even be grateful they did when you get older.
3. Hello Dolly & Other Equipment
Be sure to check in advance if your dorm room or apartment has an elevator or stairs. In the latter case, a dolly and other moving equipment will be worth its weight in gold, as you find yourself staring up at three flights of stairs. Even if an elevator is available, being able to put your furniture and other belongings on wheels can make a world of difference.
4. Get A Jump On Everyone Else – Move in Early
Some schools and apartment buildings will allow students to move in prior to the official date that everyone else is scheduled to be there. Not having to deal with hundreds of other students trying to move in at the same time will be a huge stress reliever. Getting all of your stuff loaded in without having to wait for elevators or navigate around commotion will make your day go a lot better.
5. Yes People Steal, Even At Your School
It is sad to say, but thefts do occur on college campuses, especially during moving in time when everyone’s stuff is out in the open. Due to space limitations, you might be forced to park your car or truck down the street. If that is the case, be sure to lock the vehicle every time you leave it. In addition, do not leave valuables in open view. It sounds like a hassle to have to lock your car every time, but it will be well worth it in the long run.
6. If All Else Fails – Hire A Mover
If the thought of moving all of your stuff in again wipes you out even before you start, there is always the option of hiring a professional moving company. Many movers actually specialize in helping college students get back to campus, so find one that can make life easier for you. It might cost more than doing the job yourself, but the convenience factor is well worth it.
